“Always Good To Me” is a calm, reflective piece with a gentle, lyrical melody supported by a deep, sonorous bass line and smooth arpeggiated harmonies.
The steady, pulse like 4/4 rhythm and expansive key of D major with drop D tuning create a warm and comforting mood that is restful and uplifting.
This makes for a good encore piece to slow the pace and mellow the mood at the end of a concert.
I originally composed this piece for solo guitar (also available from Productions D’ Oz) as a personal devotion, or a song without words if you like and have performed it many times in my own concerts.
It is best to play the music with rubato and lots of expression which help shape the phrasing and highlight the emotional peaks.
I arranged the piece for two guitars as an engagement present for my friends Sam and Emma Rodwell of the Roth Duo and they have performed this piece many times in their UK concerts. In re-creating the piece as a duo I composed a completely different middle section which is substantially longer than the one composed for the solo piece.
