Shouts and Whispers was originally composed for guitar quartet in 2018. Each part primarily consists of single lines which happen to pair perfectly in a two-guitar reduction. This pairing provides guitar one with a two-voice polyphony at times while guitar two uses alternating arpeggios whose notes overlap, creating beautiful angles for support.
The title reflects the sudden dynamic changes in the music but is also a metaphor for contrast in life where peace and contentment are sometimes met with challenges.
