Description

This is another transcription in the Johanson Series, and comprises K87 in B minor and K46 In E major.
K87 first... Now this fits guitar quartet like it was written for it. It pushes Guitar One's left hand up onto the body, but the mix of long vibrato notes interspersed with gentle rising and falling decorations is soothing yet uplifting. Much of the transcription sees all four guitars fairly high in the pitch-range and this not only gives the transcription a gentle and delicate texture, but also makes the occasional bass note all the more effective. As the pace is quite relaxed, the guitars have time to develop the sound and add our instrument's own delightful characteristics to the original. The rhythm, tempo and technical demands on this piece are modest and bring it within the grasp of even an intermediate ensemble.
K46...The original contains massive tumbling arpeggios and scales, and these have been parcelled up and framed out into manageable chunks with, more importantly, entries that are easy to time and synchronize. Elsewhere, an Asturias-like open B thickens the texture and adds movement without complexity and many of the fast runs are in bite-sized chukkas. It's a neat and competent solution and a nice arrangement.
