Description

Le dix d’avril

At least thirteen versions of this song, including two variants set to different tunes—one of which features an alternate refrain—were collected between 1918 and 1925 along the St. Lawrence River. The song has been found on Île d’Orléans, in Saint-Denis-de-Kamouraska, and in Gaspésie, more specifically in Port-Daniel.

Sea shanties evoke the ocean through themes of lost love, war, and death. The lyrics of this song depict an attack at sea and the death of sailors.

Our folklore is rich; with this quartet, I offer a small fragment of our heritage.

Fair winds,

Luc Levesque
