Description

In contrast to my Sonata No. 4, which is quite eclectic, Sonata No. 5 is built in a more classical vein with a formally balanced and unified structure. Though the general modal harmonic language relies on Balkan idioms, the piece has late romantic overtones, especially in the melodic first and second movements which display long lyrical lines. The short Bartokian scherzo is fused with a fast-paced fourth movement in triple time to create a dynamic finale, which features odd-meter and polyrhythmic textures. Though the piece is overall classical in nature, it represents a synthesis of my previous ventures with sonata form. Sonata No. 5 is dedicated to Judicael Perroy.
