Apparently based on a popular Italian song, Matteo is a gently undulating, highly melodic piece which sounds as if its origins were once a lullaby. After a very short introduction which hints at the tune of the main piece, the work gets underway with the charming melody line entering as a middle voice and then appearing in the upper register where it stays for a few bars. This melody makes briefer appearances in various registers before a series of high-position chords bring the work to a satisfying and tender conclusion. This soothing, almost naive composition is full of melodic charm and simple harmony and very effective it is too. Would be suitable for the Intermediate player.
