WORKSHOP

Throughout the pages

The art of musical engraving

Objective: To discover the history and techniques of musical engraving, from its artisanal origins to today's digital tools.

From the earliest medieval manuscripts to modern notation software, musical notation has always been a fundamental tool for transmitting and preserving music. Musical engraving, which consists of transforming notation into a clear, legible, and aesthetically balanced score, plays a key role in this process. This workshop offers an exploration of the evolution of musical notation and musical engraving, highlighting the principles that guide the layout of a score and its impact on musical performance. Far from being a simple transcription, musical engraving strives to clearly convey the composer's intentions, taking into account the layout and musical grammar to optimize the performers' reading. An invitation to reflect on the importance of the score as a means of preserving, transmitting, and performing music.
