The nine pieces here are aimed at younger players up to around grade two level. Canto del Pais has a melody punctuated by open bass strings (useful training for stopping bass strings) with indicated tonal contrasts; Valse du Foulard works around the D minor chord with a short excursion into D major, all notes falling easily under the fingers, and Etude Jaune is an effective arpeggio study requiring accents with the a finger. Atome in 5/4, is a short piece in which each bar is repeated as an echo. Billet Retour plays with the D major chord shape, sliding around the fingerboard, which could appeal to many children, and Primavera has
a melody in the bass with a straightforward arpeggiated accompaniment above. Milonga Courte is effective in A minor, leaning towards its famous namesake by Jorge Cardoso but requiring only a few chord shapes with everything within easy reach. Accents with the a finger bring out the simple melody in the middle section. MeliMelo explores the fingerboard with a melodic figure presented in different positions and guises including arpeggio sections, and the rhythmic Cubanina is a useful exercise in slurring. Written carefully with the young player in mind, this volume is never condescending and offers basic techniques in an effectively musical way.
