Description

In recent years the UK guitarist/composer Nick Fletcher has been quite productive with six CD releases, a DVD and over 50 compositions, many of which have been published. His style ranges from Celtic to South American/Latin to contemporary folk to neo-Baroque, this latter being the form The Chalice takes.

He seems to have a fondness for the Baroque style as this his eighth one composed as such (the piece is sub-titled Fantasia No. 8) and it has to be said that he does it very well indeed for here he has written a convincing work very much in the 17th century mode. The Chalice has a measured pace, almost like a grand regal procession and this majestic aura surrounding the piece continues to the very end. As a stand-alone piece it is probably too short for the formal recital, but if perhaps paired up with two or three of his other fantasies then this could be a very attractive addition to any programme, especially if the other works are anywhere near as charming as this one. This edition is attractively produced with clear printing and well fingered. The standard required to do it full justice is around Grade 7+.
