Description

"This is number two in a serie to be written by the prolific British guitarist/composer Mark Houghton. The serie is called '25 Sketches for Guitar' which in itself has a subtitle on the front cover stating 'One Piece per Month' and this month's (or whenever it was published) is Elegy. This tuneful little composition, dedicated to one Hilary Howarth, is a poignant affair in A minor of just 38 bars in length with two slow outer sections contrasting nicely with a brief slightly animated central part. Throughout there is an air of melancholia with the mood being lightened eventually by the conclusive uplifting major chord. The technical level is not high, around grade 3-4 and it can be quite difficult to compose interesting and attractive guitar music at this level but as usual Mark Houghton has delivered the goods."
