Description

In a sense, the title says it all: straightforward, middle-grade studies which are maybe not quite as simple as they first appear. All the usual guitar devices are present in force, with parallel sixths and fixed chord shapes performing their usual function against open string pedals.
What rescues these pieces from terminal banality, and in doing so fully justifies the second part of the tide, is the inventive use of scordatura- In addition to the obvious benefit of accessing some otherwise impractical tonalities, larmarelli's use of G, E flat, low D and even low C as open string basses successfully side-steps the ever present d-ireat of key monotony in the set as a whole. It also presents some humbling moments for the unprepared reader, the use of E flat major, complete with chromatics, in the first piece proving an absolute stinker at the first attempt. This said, it's well worth the effort, the combination of key and scordatura yielding some wonderfully dark sonorities in an otherwise unexceptional exercise in triplet arpeggios.
Attractive and practical examples of how the guitar's key range and expressive possibilities may be infinitely enhanced by intelligent use of irregular tunings - something which folk guitarists have known for years.

Ces cinq études introduisent une atmosphère assez sombre pour les deux premières, très mélodique pour la dernière, avec des scordatura (et donc des tonalités) originales (mi bémol, ré, do et sol). Les troisième et quatrième sont basées respectivement sur des combinaisons de doigtés et une polyrythmie simple par adjonction de plans. Les climats sont tous très précis et originaux, même lorsqu'ils sont atonaux, ce qui donne envie de les travailler. Chaque page présente une série de difficultés bien ciblées, comme par exemple la lecture dans une tonalité inhabituelle. Aucune n'est vraiment développée mais là n'est pas le but, et la longueur est juste celle qu'il faut pour en tirer ce que l'on doit en tirer. Une réussite (à partir du 2e cycle).
