Composition awarded in Guitar Foundation of America 1996 International Set Piece Competition
Michael Golden has composed music in various media including ensembles, jazz groups, computers and live electronics and for film, video and theatre productions. This work under review won the Guitar Foundation of America Intemational set- piece competition in 1996 and has been recorded by Patrick
Kearney. Framesetu De, subtitled 'the art of being in the right space', is made up of seven short, linked movements, which are meant to be heard not only as seven individual 'miniatures' in their own right, but as a complete 'whole' as well. The music calls for pitch bends and sung notes from the performer (the word 'Dee' is sung to the note D) which all adds to the interest in this fascinating piece. The moods are varied and many in this work, ranging from energetic to passionate. from slow and expressive to violent. Framesetu De required several play throughs before anything meaningful began to gel, but once the ideas began to take form I found this a worthwhile addition to the modern classical guitar repertoire. A piece well worth a look at and to consider for the 'modern' slot in recitals.
