Description

Milonga triste was composed in 1997. The music is both seductive and sensuous and is a delight to play, with all four parts having virtually an equal say in the proceedings. Marchelie has the compositional technique to keep everything simple, his harmonies are always logical yet carry a lovely sense of colour while he builds rhythms with an ease which needs to be studied carefully if you wish to see how its done.
This is a good quartet and deserves to be used. The composer assumes that you can play, as there are moments that demand a technical surety, yet the parts are well written for the instrument. This is one of several pieces by this composer that have impressed me over the last few months. I will watch his development with great interest.
