Canción y Danza, Op. 117

Duarte's ability to absorb the music traits of a composer or country, sometimes without having visited the country, pervaded his entire career. Written in 1994, Canción y Danza was one of several 'homage' pieces Duarte wrote for composers and performers The title refers to Antonio Ruiz-Pipó's famous composition of the same name. The score includes a second Danza, discovered in 2020. The slow Canción displays a nostalgic and dramatic quality, whereas the fast Danzas are almost ironic, but still nostalgic in their character. The spirit catches that of Ruiz-Pipó, whilst not mimicking it.
