Sight-Reading

The primary role of this book is to help develop sight-reading skills in a chamber music context (play with one or more instrumentalists). The suggested tempos are relatively moderate. In a concert setting, the Allegro and Vivace are most of the time of virtuoso nature in baroque music, often too fast for sight-reading.

 

Recording

There are four versions, version A for the continuo, B for the top voice, and C for the two voices. A midi version will allow to slow down or speed up the music depending on the desired level of difficulty.

 

Minimalism

The top and bottom voices are the core of the continuo, simple but sophisticated at the same time.

 

Continuo

Only the continuo part written by the composer has been kept, the harmonic rendering not being the goal in this workbook. This is an interesting opportunity to develop the bass clef reading skills, much useful for its usage in all genres of music.

 

Repeats and Ornaments

To keep the reading as fluid as possible (also to keep the size of recording files small), ornaments and repeats have been omitted in most cases.

 

L’horloge interne

The inner pulse is essential in this kind of exercise. A whole note is long in an Adagio, without a visual or audio reference to play exactly on the following beat.
