Description

(.) there's a compelling gigue feel mixed with some up-tempo syncopation that definitely conjures up a vision of a horse galloping at speed. Major sevenths and semiquavers give a delightfully airy and spacious feel to the harmonies and the bold mix of tone colours further adds to the confident writing style. Interesting rhythmic shapes continue to appear and there are some wonderful modulations in what is a rather more difficult centre section, not merely so because of the preponderance of flats - several parts move into three note chords. The end isn't in sight yet - there is a fast and furious percussion that is quite hoof-life (.). Just before the end, there's a section where rhythm is going to be a real issue in holding the ensemble together, and the greatest challenge is going to be rhythmic rather than chordal. Not for the fainthearted, though it's generally Grade five to seven. And I have to say - I like it a lot.
