In Honorem Ioanni Doulandi, Op. 97

In Honorem Ioanni Doulandi Op.97 was written in 1984 for the Canadian guitarist, Alan Rinehart. Rinehart suggested that the music should be connected to lute music in some way, an interest shared between the two friends. Duarte used John Dowland’s Melancholy Galliard as its basis, in addition, he also quoted from some other pieces by the Elizabethan composer. The theme is followed by six Variations and a Fantasia-Finale.
