This piece draws inspiration from one of the most iconic rhythms of Cuban music, the “Son” . Its title, “Aires,” holds a double meaning: on one hand, it evokes the reminiscence of a distinct musical style; on the other, it alludes to the breeze that sweeps through Havana`s Malecón, carrying with it the echoes of a vibrant music.
The composition opens with a lively section in a contemporary style. Gradually, its rhythm evolves into a second section where the influence of the Son becomes clear through the bass rhythm pattern known as “tumbao.” This rhythmic element, an essential feature of the Son, not only underpins the harmony and overall rhythm but also, with its emphasis on syncopation, creates that sensual cadence that defines and characterizes the genre. The piece returns to its initial theme and concludes with a chord that invites the music to resonate beyond the final measure.
