After having the chance to perform a few concerts with Theodosii Spassov, a renowned player of the kaval (a traditional Bulgarian flute), who has been a continuous and important source of musical inspiration for me, I made, together with my wife, the flutist Mie Ogura, a arrangement of Spassov’s piece “Say Bob”, for flute and guitar.
Rather than starting directly with the original piece’s motifs, I wrote a solo guitar introduction that, while announcing the atmosphere and carrying the spirit, uses independent, new material.
The potential of this material eventually inspired “Esquisse modale”.
