Description

Firstly, be assured that this is not 'swing' in the specific jazz sense. The piece is probably meant to sound akin to Californian quasi minimalist music, of a trance-inducing nature; if so it succeeds pretty well. Ostinato patterns in a constantly shifting meter - 2/4 alternating with 7/16 much of the time - gradually move through a variety of different ideas. The 6th string is tuned to F, giving an unfamiliar ring to the sound and ensuring the music stays very close to the same key. Towards the close, many of these patterns use slurs onto a strong beat with a plucked note coinciding with the slurred, consistent with the way that most of the considerable difficulty in this work relates to the focussing of small details rather than the usual macho technical stuff. (.) A very interesting, well thought out and properly delivered composition requiring high musical competence.
